Welcome to my web site... A little background info about me, I started hooking in 1990 after buying a house for a Bed & Breakfast. There were wide pine floors everywhere, so rug hooking was a craft of necessity. Guests started asking for instruction and I decided I could make this a business.once we sold the Bed and Breakfast, I kept my rug business and ran it full time and run it full time from our 1806 Federal home. My shop is small but full of supplies, kits and patterns. I not only sell my own designs, but those of other companies, as well.

My online catalog has 15 patterns and 5 kits. There is also a series of original designs I call my " Hooked Heirlooms" which are featured on one of the pages. I like to make various items out of rug hooking, not just rugs, as you will see.

I pride myself on being a "one stop shop" for rug hooking. If you have never picked up a hook, you can find all you need to get started. There are kits, patterns, frames, wools, hooks, cutters, and lots of instruction books. There is always a rug in progress for you to see and try your hand. Lessons are scheduled throughout the year and private or semi-private lessons are available at a moment's notice. Hours are by chance or appointment so give a call if you will be in the area. Payment for purchases are: Cash, Personal Checks, and Travelers checks preferred.We can also take MC/VISA. Gift certificates are also available.

This rug is entitled "Sampler Rug" as I tried to design and hook many features found in old samplers. Most samplers are very simple in design so I thought this would make a charming primitive rug.
The "Sampler Rug" is 53" x 25 1/2" and is hooked in a #8 cut. I used both hand-dyed and as is wools to create an antique sampler look. The design is available through my pattern and kit company, Primitive Pastimes.
I color planned the rug using my as is and already dyed wools, choosing muted, dull colors as seen in old samplers. The background is several different beiges, that I hooked to give a mottled look. The grass and trees are two or three different tweeds, mixed to give an unplanned look. Note, the lettering was done in the colors from the rug itself. As in old samplers, when a letter or word was started in one color thread, they would use it to the end, without any waste. I hooked mine in the same fashion. WROUGHT BY was used in the signing of samplers. The willow was commonly used , especially in mourning samplers.
The rug took roughly a month to complete. It was a pleasure to hook because of all the color changes. The background was worked with the houses and willow so it didn't become boring by itself. I was worried about hooking so many letters but found changing the colors frequently helped.
The favorite part of the rug for me was the coming together of the colors with the design. Once the colors were chosen then hooked, the design came alive. The most challenging part was hooking the willow. I hoped it would look like a weeping willow.
Overall, I am very pleased with the design and my color choices. I accomplished what I set out to do. That was to design and hook an antique-looking rug that was similar in style to my antique samplers.
